PAWTUCKET — This is what great sports rivalries are all about: Anything Lincoln can do, Cumberland wants to do it better. Even if the difference between these two outstanding hockey teams is nearly negligible, the Clippers want to outdo their neighborhood rivals on the ice.

Hendricken turns away rival Mount for third time, sweeps regular-season hockey series

March 1, 2014

WARWICK --- This wasn’t Game 3 of the best-of-three state championship series at Brown University, but Mount St. Charles and Bishop Hendricken did their best to help duplicate that atmosphere in their regular-season finale on Saturday night at Thayer Arena.

Playing in front of a packed house, the Mounties and Hawks hooked up in a fast-paced, tight-checking duel that contained just one penalty and very few shots and mistakes by either side.

DeSilva, Reynolds help Burrillville hoopsters down N.S. again in opening round of Div. III tournament

February 28, 2014

BURRILLVILLE — The rematch featured little suspense.
In fact, you could say other than a brief flurry by North Smithfield late in the first half, Burrillville was the hoops outfit in complete control.

Wellington’s hat trick helps Cumberland hockey team defeat North Smithfield, 3-1, hike record to 17-0

February 28, 2014

BURRILLVILLE — Despite Cumberland High’s amazing run so far this season, North Smithfield refused to be intimidated in a huge Division II-North clash on Friday night.
Head coach Paul Nadeau’s Northmen skated with authority, played with heart and desire for a full 45 minutes and gave the unbeaten Clippers a scare.
In the end, however, junior winger and tri-captain Greg Wellington by his lonesome found the net more often than the hosts as Cumberland strolled out of Levy Arena with a 3-1 triumph.

CENTRAL FALLS — The last time Central Falls and Cumberland met on a basketball court, just nine days ago, the Clippers upset the Warriors on their home court on a late hoop by freshman Brandon Kolek.
When the two teams met again Friday night on the same court in a Division II playoff opener, the Warriors made sure there would be no late heroics by Cumberland. Central Falls held a 49-44 lead with nine minutes left before going on a 7-0 run that put the game away.

Friars' Kofane hopes breakout game represents tip of the iceberg

February 27, 2014

PROVIDENCE — Brice Kofane is a soft-spoken young man who last Sunday was given the chance to turn up the volume and ingratiate himself as a nice complimentary piece for Ed Cooley’s Friars.

With reserve big man Carson Desrosiers under the weather and quarantined in the visiting locker room at Butler’s Hinkle Fieldhouse, someone amongst Providence’s razor-thin reserve corps was going to have to step into the breach. The catch was that this warm and able body couldn’t go through the motions and act like a decoy. He had to register a pulse and produce.

Division boys' hoop playoffs have plenty of merit

February 27, 2014

The definition of an undercard is a boxing event before the main match.

In Rhode Island high school boys’ basketball, the three divisional tournaments that tip off Friday night are seen as warm-up acts to a bigger and better event – a 16-team open tournament. Before arriving at the process where the crowing of one champion takes place, however, the order of business is pitting familiar foes against each other.

Lincoln girls halt slide, net 53-29 win over Mount

February 26, 2014

LINCOLN — After rolling to six straight triumphs, Lincoln High sustained a crushing 38-37 Division II-North loss to Moses Brown School on Feb. 12, and that sent it into a dismal tailspin.
On Valentine's Night, they dropped a 57-34 verdict to II Central-leading and unbeaten St. Raphael, 57-34, before getting exploited by Scituate (69-49) and Johnston (42-29) in two more league clashes.

Burrillville holds off N.S. to lock up sole possession of Division III-North boys' basketball championship

February 25, 2014

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Burrillville High starters and subs stormed the floor after manufacturing a thrilling 38-35 triumph over rival North Smithfield before approximately 300 fans at the Lovett Memorial Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
They had stellar reason: With the victory, the Broncos sealed the Division III-North crown, which is pretty much a rarity for them.
Senior tri-captain David Reynolds paced the visitors with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore guard Jared Cabral chipped in 10 points. Junior center Isaiah DeSilva only netted a pair, but pulled down nine boards with five blocks.
