Woonsocket boys' basketball | Villa Novans rock Townies with 84-point explosion

January 14, 2015

EAST PROVIDENCE – As much fun as it is, watching Woonsocket run and gun its way past lower echelon Division I opponents, coach T.J. Ciolfi understands that offense alone will not get his team very far in the playoffs.

January 13, 2015

PROVIDENCE – The good news for Friar faithful: PC currently sits in a four-way tie for first place in the Big East.

The bad news: those same Friars are averaging 69.1 points-per-game through 17 outings, placing them last in scoring in the 10-team conference as of Tuesday.

January 13, 2015

PAWTUCKET – In their first year running Tolman High’s wrestling program, head coach Jason Rushton and assistant Matt Medina are instilling an aggressive approach that may bring dividends by tournament time, assuming the wrestlers keep working hard.

The Tigers showed flashes of skill during a 40-36 loss to Ponaganset on Tuesday evening at the Donaldson Gym. Ponaganset, now 4-1 on the season, jumped out to a 40-9 lead before the Tigers won the final five matches (two by forfeit).

January 11, 2015

CUMBERLAND – Cumberland High didn't reign in its own annual John D. Gorman Memorial Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, but veteran head coach Steve Gordon didn't mind an iota.

Providence College basketball | Friars dig deep in OT win over Georgetown

January 10, 2015

PROVIDENCE – As Providence’s Ed Cooley and his coaching counterpart on Saturday afternoon, Georgetown’s John Thompson III, are well aware, the Big East was built on rough-and rumble play that at times can burn the retinas.

It’s a league that despite all the changes is still not for the faint of heart.

Providence College basketball | McGair: Friars charting new course with deeper bench

January 9, 2015

PROVIDENCE – As Providence’s win over Butler earlier in the week illustrated, dishing out minutes is no exact science.

Coaches like Ed Cooley have to consider every factor when concocting a game plan for that day’s opposition. The toughest decisions don’t always boil down to playing zone or man-to-man on defense. There is one consideration that carries prime importance: Ultimately, you play the guys who provide the best chance to win.

Burrillville – Davies girls' basketball | Patriots’ defense paves way for 51-43 win over Broncos

January 9, 2015

LINCOLN  –  You would think head coach Joe Handy would have been thrilled after his Davies Tech players had collected a pivotal 51-43 victory over Burrillville at Gaskin Alumni Hall on Friday night.

After all, his defense allowed only one Bronco – senior center Catherine Keable – to reach double figures in scoring, and forced a whopping 41 turnovers.

Handy, however, seemed disenchanted with the Division III-North triumph.
