Burrillville football team clips Classical, 21-9

October 17, 2010

BURRILLVILLE -- Burrillville moved back into a tie for fourth place in Division III on Saturday with an efficient 21-9 victory over winless Classical.
The Broncos fell behind 2--0 on a safety in the first quarter before scoring three straight touchdowns to put the game out of reach.
“We started slow, as usual,” Burrillville coach Gennaro Ferraro said. “We were up 8-2 at the half after our defense made a goal-line stand near the end of the second quarter.”
The Broncos went ahead in the second quarter on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Roger Blanchard to Kevin Deschamps. Dan Mattera ran for the two-point conversion.
In the third quarter, Blanchard capped a long drive with a three-yard touchdown run. Mattera finished another substantial drive in the fourth quarter with a one-yard plunge into the end zone.
Classical hit on a 25-yard TD pass from Tim Eng to Spencer Gaye to close out the scoring.
“We played real well in the second half,” Ferraro said. “Our ball-control offense started to click and our defense played a good game highlighted by the goal-line stand. The game was full of long drives for both teams. Our defense bent but it did not break.”
The Broncos are now 3-2 in division play, tying them with Lincoln for the fourth and final playoff berth with a month left in the regular season. Burrillville beat Lincoln and thus holds a head-to-head tiebreaker over the Lions.
They visit Scituate for a non-league contest this coming Saturday, then host Narragansett (1-3) and Tiverton (1-3) the next two weeks.
A Nov. 12 road game at Middletown (3-1) could decide the Broncos’ playoff fate.
