Daniel R. Whalen

PRUDENCE ISLAND- Daniel R. Whalen, of Prudence Island and Harborview in Newport, passed away after an illness. His wife, Anke, passed away in 1995.
Dan was born in Millville, MA, the son of the late Philip F. and Catherine (Flynn) Whalen. He attended Mt. St. Charles Academy, the College of the Holy Cross and the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a Navy veteran of World War II in the South Pacific theatre. Dan and four of his brothers served their country during the war. Although three of them were wounded, they all returned safely.
Dan lived in Blackstone for many years prior to his retirement to Prudence Island. He was active in Blackstone politics as Town Moderator. He was a Quality Control Engineer for Itek Corporation and Litton Industries prior to his retirement.
Dan was predeceased by his parents, wife and sisters, Mary McComick and Katherine Walsh, four brothers, Phil, Chuckie, Tommy and Gene. He is survived by his brother and good friend Joe of Hamden, CT and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral with visitation beginning at 10AM will be held, Wednesday, October 27, 2010 with a service following at 11AM from the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Paul's Cemetery, Farm Street (Gaskill in Woonsocket), Blackstone, MA. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude's Cancer Research Center, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942, or the Republican Candidate, running for office, of your choice.
