Tuesday, 22 September 2009

By JOSEPH FITZGERALD

BELLINGHAM — Special Town Meeting voters Oct. 14 will be asked to consider the Board of Selectmen's recommendation to create an area of economic development at 125 Depot St., the new home of Hilliard Precision Products, Inc.

If approved by voters, the town would apply to the state Economic Assistance Coordinating Council to designate the location as an Economic Opportunity Area (EOA). An EOA is an area within a designated economic target area prioritized for economic development. These areas are selected by individual communities and must meet specific criteria for the designation.
Article 7 on the town meeting warrant will ask voters to authorize selectmen to submit to the state an application to designate the property as an EOA. A companion article, Article 8, will ask voters to direct the board to sign a tax increment financing agreement with Hilliard Precision Products in connection with the development of the property pending the state's approval of the EOA application.
The Special Town Meeting kicks off at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium, 60 Blackstone St. There are a total of 18 articles on the warrant.
