BURRILLVILLE — The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the small explosion that occurred in a Nasonville apartment Saturday afternoon.
Firefighters were called to 684 Douglas Pike in Nasonville on Saturday shortly after 4 p.m. A neighbor had called 911 after witnessing black smoke coming from the house next door. “We were dispatched after receiving a report of a possible explosion in the building,” said Nasonville Fire Capt. Lori Poirier. “Upon arrival, there was smoke coming from the first floor. A small fire had broken out in the kitchen, dining room area.” Firefighters were able to extinguish the small fire within minutes. The blaze caused minor smoke damage to two rooms in the wood frame, two-story building. Two residents were home at the time of the apparent explosion. They were able to evacuate before emergency personnel arrived, according to Poirier. A male victim was transported by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital. He was treated and released on Saturday, said a spokesperson for the hospital. The other resident was uninjured. According to published reports, the male victim was known to work on toy rockets. Neighbors suggested that the explosion could have come from a model rocket. Members of the State Fire Marshal's Office are now trying to piece together the cause of the explosion. “It's still under investigation,” Poirier said. Investigators at the State Fire Marshal's Office refused to comment about the incident on Monday. A section of Douglas Pike was temporarily closed to traffic Saturday during the response. Several neighborhood residents gathered on the street to watch. Responding to the incident were members of the Nasonville, Oakland-Mapleville, Harrisville and Pascoag Fire Departments. |
