DNA links city man to Arizona rape E-mail

WOONSOCKET — A city man on parole for robbery has been arrested by the state police after DNA tests linked him to a gang rape in Arizona seven years ago, they said.

Angel Louis Deleon, 25, was wanted on a Maricopa County Sheriff's warrant for kidnapping, three counts of sexual assault, attempted sexual assault and two counts of sexual abuse, said Capt. Dave Neill, detective commander of the state police.
Neill said Deleon is allegedly one of two men responsible for attacking a 16-year-old girl in Phoenix on June 2, 2002. Neill said a warrant was issued for Deleon, and state police arrested him, on the same day DNA tests confirmed his involvement in the incident — Oct. 30.
Deleon was on parole for a 2008 robbery that occurred in Woonsocket when he was arrested. He had been living in the Providence Center Rehabilitation facility at Zambarano Hospital in Burrillville, a halfway house for ex-prisoners transitioning into the community.
But the halfway house had granted Deleon an overnight pass to stay at his mother's house at 2229 Diamond Hill Road, where he was taken into custody, said Neill.
Deleon had not yet been paroled from the Adult Correctional Institutions when the state police initiated DNA testing procedures on him at the request of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office several weeks ago, however.
The tests showed that DNA from Deleon matched material obtained from evidence at the crime scene, said Neill.
“Once they were able to confirm that Deleon was the subject they were looking for, they immediately issued a warrant for his arrest,” said Neill. “He was arrested that day, on Friday.”
The MCSO was unable to provide additional details about the alleged rape, saying it had only served the warrant for the Phoenix Police Department. Sgt. Trent Crump, a PPD spokesman, said Deleon was one of two men who allegedly attacked the girl in a Motel Six not far from her home on the Black Canyon Freeway in Phoenix. Crump said the girl's parents thought she was staying at a friend's house for the night.
Crump said the girl did not require any medical attention when she was found walking on a road near the motel after the alleged attack, but she later told police she had been sexually assaulted by two men.
Deleon is now held without bail at the ACI pending an extradition hearing. The matter was continued to Nov. 9 after a preliminary appearance by Deleon before a District Court judge in Providence on Monday.
According to the judiciary's Web site, Deleon pleaded no contest to Woonsocket police charges of second-degree robbery, misdemeanor larceny and vandalism on Sept. 25, 2008. The charges were based on an incident that occurred several months earlier.
Deleon was sentenced to 10 years, with three to serve at the ACI and the balance suspended, with probation. Technically, he's on parole because he was released from his court-ordered prison time early, said Neill.
