WOONSOCKET — Mayor-elect Leo T. Fontaine, due to be sworn in tonight, has selected a gubernatorial aide as his economic development director and is bringing back a former city solicitor to serve as the city's legal counsel.
Matthew Wojcik, deputy director of appointments for Gov. Donald Carcieri, will wear three hats in the new  administration. The  title of the Cumberland resident will be director of economic development/director of human services/administrative assistant.
Joseph P. Carroll, who previously worked as city solicitor for several years, will serve as interim solicitor.
The appointments were identified in mandatory disclosures to the office of City Clerk Pauline Payeur in advance of Fontaine's  swearing-in at 8 tonight at the Stadium Theatre, Payeur said. The City Charter requires the mayor-elect to identify department heads and other aides before taking office.
Another notable selection on the roster is the appointment of Arianne Pare as Fontaine's secretary. Pare is currently a secretary in the engineering division.
In related personnel action, Fontaine will retain Finance Director Theodore “Ted” Przybyla — at least for now. Przybyla's official title will be changed to “interim director of finance,” indicating that Fontaine may be searching for a permanent replacement.
Two of Menard's longtime department heads will glide into the Fontaine era without any alteration of status or responsibility.  Director of Public Works/Administration Michael A. Annarummo, a former two-time director of the state Department of Environmental Management, and Planning Director Joel Mathews, who has worked in the Planning Department since the 1970s, are staying put in the Fontaine administration.
Members of the City Council and School Committee will also be sworn in during the first-ever inaugural at the Stadium. Later that night, councilors will hold a brief meeting to elect a new council president to replace Fontaine. The School Committee will hold a special reorganizational meeting tomorrow night in the Woonsocket Area Career and Technical Center to choose a chairperson.
In other business before the newly-minted City Council, Fontaine is asking the panel to reappoint Municipal Court Judge Lloyd R. Gariepy and Probate Judge Thomas M. Dickinson.
Carcieri will make opening remarks during the inaugural, while Brian R. Blais, a former vice president of the City Council now working as a lawyer in New York, will serve as master of ceremonies.
