Woman dies in crash E-mail
Friday, 25 December 2009
LINCOLN — A young woman from Millbury, Mass., died early Thursday morning after a single motor vehicle crash on Route 146 North. A Nissan Maxima, operated by 23-year-old Vanessa Dunn of Millbury, was traveling northbound on Route 146 near the Sherman Avenue exit around 1:20 a.m. Dunn apparently lost control of the vehicle while attempting to change lanes, police said.
A motorist, who was traveling on Route 146 North at the time, told police they saw the Nissan operating at a “high rate of speed” before it left the roadway, according to State Police Capt. James Swanberg.
“Witnesses observed the vehicle pass them on the right at a high rate of speed,” Swanberg said. “As the vehicle passed them and she tried to get back into the left lane, it appears the driver lost control of the vehicle.”
The Nissan left the roadway, struck a guardrail and traveled for a short time in the air. The vehicle struck two trees and rolled over before coming to a stop 250 feet from the guardrail. Dunn, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time.  The victim was pronounced dead a short time later.
While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, speed is expected to be ruled a factor.  “It looks like speed definitely played a role in the crash,” Swanberg said.
Road conditions on Route 146 North were dry at the time, according to police.
