Chafee to announce run for governor E-mail
Monday, 28 December 2009
WARWICK — Promising to chart a “New Way Forward” for Rhode Island, Lincoln Chafee will kick off his Independent candidacy for governor next Monday. Chafee, a former U.S. Senator and Warwick mayor, renounced his membership in the Republican Party after he lost his Senate seat to Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse in 2006 after besting then-Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey in an acrimonious GOP primary.
He will be entering what could become a crowded field of gubernatorial hopefuls that could include Laffey, who is showing an increased interest in becoming the Republican candidate for governor in the November election. The only other Republican candidate to announce, Rory Smith, has already dropped out of the race.
At least two Democrats will be vying for the chief executive’s seat, Attorney General Patrick Lynch and General Treasurer Frank Caprio.
Moderate Party chief Ken Block has said his group will field a candidate for governor — one who must garner at least 5 percent of the vote for the Moderates to remain an officially recognized party
In a written statement Monday, Chafee’s campaign said: “Over the last 25 years, while serving in leadership positions at the local and national level, Lincoln Chafee has forged a path of independence. In his campaign to become Governor of Rhode Island, he aims to bring his unquestioned integrity, proven record of bringing people together, and positive vision to the State House, charting a New Way Forward for Rhode Island.”
Campaign finance reports show Chafee lagging behind both Caprio and Lynch in fundraising to this point.
Chafee will make his announcement Monday at 10 a.m. at the Iron Works Tavern in the Hilton Garden Inn on Jefferson Boulevard in Warwick. Doors will open at 9:30.
