By STEVE MAZZONE Sports writer WOONSOCKET – Although its already clinched the division, Mount St. Charles Academy will wrap up the regular season this weekend with a big showdown versus Bay View Academy. MSC head coach Amy Maguire believes a win in Saturday’s encounter would give her team a distinct edge in the upcoming playoffs. The past two days in their own Presidents Day Challenge, the Mounties certainly gave Maguire confidence in knowing that her squad will be ready for the challenge. A mere 24 hours after blanking Hamden High of Connecticut in its opener, Mount did the same to a strong Massachusetts’ squad, Framingham High, in the championship finals Tuesday afternoon, skating away with a 4-0 triumph over the Flyers at Adelard Arena.
Junior teammates Brianna Narodowy and Sam Smith each scored a goal and had an assist to lead the offense. The Mounties also got a splendid effort between the pipes from senior goalie Kayla DiLorenzo. She was named the MVP after stopping 26 shots against the Flyers and 48 overall for the tourney. “Without a doubt this will help us (this weekend),” said Maguire, whose squad defeated Hamden, 5-0, on Monday. “Framingham is a physical team like Bay View. I think they were also a very well position team, and our girls playing them and doing so well it will give them some confidence. They’ll be able to use that to push themselves to play Bay View on Saturday.” In the consolation game of the tourney, Kayla Kiernan did all the scoring for North Smithfield, including the game-winner in overtime as the Northmen held off Hamden, 4-3. Kiernan scored the clincher 5:30 into the extra period, getting the puck just past center ice and then skating to the left circle where she unleashed a hard shot that went right between the legs of goalie Lauren Grant. “She faked a slap shot, got around a defenseman and just got something on the net,” N.S. coach Bill Nangle said. The Mounties, who are currently 15-0-0 in Division I this season, battled through two close periods with the Flyers. Katie Loiselle’s tally at the 6:18 mark of the first period would account for all the offense as the host held a slim 1-0 advantage going into the final period. Framingham, a team that ranks No. 9 in the Eastern Mass. polls, had its best chance to knot the score with about three minutes left in the middle period on a power-play opportunity after Mount’s Meredith Peppes was sent to the penalty box for tripping. During a brief 20-second span, the Flyers attacked the Mounties’ net, firing four close-range shots in the direction of DiLorenzo, who was able to thwart all those attempts away. She was helped in her efforts with some outstanding play from defensemen Cait Bray and Erin McQuade. “Kayla’s a great goaltender so I thought as long as she can see the shot she was going to be able to make the save,” Maguire said. “Our forwards and ‘D’ did a nice job of killing off the penalty and letting her see the shot and moving the traffic in front. Whenever that happens, I know we are in good shape.” After the first two periods where the Flyers actually held a slight edge over the Mounties in shots on goal (18-to-13), the floodgates would open for the host. Just 48 seconds into the final period, sophomore Allison Shea doubled Mount’s lead, scoring on an assist from Loiselle and Bray. The backbreaker occurred less than six minutes later. The Mounties netted their third goal on a perfectly, executed play. Narodowy got the puck against the wall to the left of the cage and flicked a pass right to the stick of Sam Smith, who deposited the shot into the right corner at 6:07. And just as P.A. announcer Pam Paige was announcing that goal, the Mounties scored again. This time Smith was rewarded for her work on the previous tally and scored one of her own nine seconds later to give Mount a comfortable 4-0 cushion. “That really just kind of sealed it,” Maguire said. “The team was skating with some real good confidence. They were playing man-to-man coverage. They knew that as long as they kept skating, they could skate right around them. They just had to keep moving.” The tournament turned out to be a somewhat emotional one for the Mounties, who dedicated the two-day event to the memory of Tayla D. Lackey. The 2007 MSC graduate and a former standout player died tragically in the Feb. 6 house fire in Warwick that claimed the lives of five Mount students. “We were happy we could do it for her,” Maguire said. “We are going to miss her. We are going to love her. We’ll make her proud by playing the best we can. This is the game she loved.” North Smithfield, which took a 3-1 lead against Framingham after the first period before eventually faltering down the stretch in an eventual 6-4 setback, came out strong again versus Hamden. Kiernan give the Northmen a quick 2-0 advantage after the first period with both her tallies coming less than two minutes apart. She scored on a power-play goal at 7:34 that was assisted by Cassandra Sherman and then lit the lamp again at 9:12 on a feed from Sherman and Jessica Salisbury. In a contest that turned into a nail-biter by the end, the Northmen would go scoreless for a nearly two-period stretch after Kiernan’s second goal. Hamden would tie the game at 2 on a pair of early, third-period goals by Britne Sargolini and Heather DelCervo. Kiernan would give her teammates the lead back by getting her hat trick at 6:37, but Hamden’s Colleen Murphy sent the game into OT with her goal less than 30 seconds later. The Northmen got a solid effort from goalie Alexandra Euglow, who made 20 saves in the contest. |
