Cumberland blanks Prout, 5-0 E-mail
Friday, 05 March 2010
WOONSOCKET --- The sixth-seeded Prout School did everything it could to give third-seeded Cumberland High a run for its money in their Division II quarterfinal-round opener on Friday night, but the Clippers dominated the final period and skated away with a 5-0 victory at Adelard Arena.
Zach Dohring scored the first two goals, his 11th and 12th of the season and both off passes from Michael Kinch, and Chris Lambert also scored twice in the final 4:27 of the game to lead the winners, who broke open a close game by scoring four times in the final period.
The Clippers, who are 14-4-1 and unbeaten in their last 12 games, will try to sweep the best-of-three series with the Crusaders tonight at 9:30 p.m. in the third game of a playoff tripleheader at URI’s Boss Arena.
Dohring broke a scoreless draw with 8:20 to go in the second period with a shorthanded goal, and after he produced his second goal 1:18 into the third period, Kinch made it a 3-0 game less than five minutes into the third period by flipping in a pass by Dohring for his team-leading 14th goal of the year.
Michaelangelo Federici turned away 25 shots for the easy shutout and had 11 of his saves in the second period, including a couple of big stops to keep the game scoreless.
