SMITHFIELD --- The Johnston/North Providence co-op team scored three times during an early five-minute span in its quarterfinal-round game with Woonsocket High on Saturday night and held on for a 4-1 win that evened their best-of-three Division III series at a game apiece. The second-seeded Novans, who cruised to a 6-0 victory in Friday’s series opener, will rejoin the seventh-seeded Panthers on Monday night at Adelard Arena for the third and deciding game at a time to be announced. Sean Mowry’s shorthanded goal 8:25 into the game gave the Villa Novans (14-4-2) an early lead, but Johnston/N.P. (11-9) tied the score with 4:09 to play in the first period and took the lead for good with 1:25 on the clock. In the second period, the hosts upped their lead to 3-1 just 43 seconds into play, and a little over seven minutes later, they netted a power-play goal. Both goaltenders had standout games -- Johnston/N.P.’s Matt Domaingue stopped 30 of the 31 shots he faced, and Woonsocket’s Josh Sloan turned away 33 out of the hosts’ 37 shots. If the Novans win on Monday, they will take on third-seeded Mount Hope High in next weekend’s semifinal-round.
