WOONSOCKET — A Summer Street man is facing charges of sexually assaulting a 4-year-old boy and related charges of possession child pornography for allegedly making a home DVD movie of the assault in Westerly.
Gary M. Abruzzese, 42, of 336 Summer St., was taken into custody on the charges on Jan. 18 following an investigation of the alleged incident by Juvenile Detective Tony Wood. Wood received information that the DVD had been found at Abruzzese’s residence and after taking the suspect into custody, conducted a search that located a homemade DVD containing video of the alleged incident in a room where the suspect had computers and video equipment for making DVDs. A quantity of pornography was also located in the room and remains under investigation, according to Wood. The suspect is alleged to have sexually assaulted the 4-year-old boy, who was known to him, while in Westerly and Westerly Police filed the two counts of first-degree sexual assault in the case. Woonsocket police filed the felony child pornography charges over the discovery of the DVD video, Wood added. Wood said the video allegedly clearly shows the suspect in the act of conducting an oral sexual assault on the young victim. The suspect had a elaborate video production set up that he was believed to have used in filming trains at different locations and selling the video to train enthusiasts, Wood said. Based of the results of the department’s investigation thus far, “it wasn’t just for train videos,” Wood alleged. The search authorized at Abruzzese’s apartment result in the seizure of many pornographic DVDs and computer CDs, floppy discs, and other computer storage devices. The department’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation unit participated in the apartment search and some of the seized material was turned over the State Police computer crimes unit for further investigation, Wood said. Also participating in the investigation were Det. Sgt. John Scully, Det. Sgt. Shawn Kerrigan, Det. Gerald Durand, Police Chief Michael L. A. Houle, members of the uniformed division and members of the Westerly Police Department. Abruzzese was processed in Woonsocket and ordered held at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston pending a hearing on the charges, police said. |
