By JOSEPH FITZGERALD MILLVILLE — Two three-year seats on the Board of Selectmen are among the town offices up for grabs in the annual town election on April 7. The two seats available on the board are held by incumbents Diane McCutcheon, the board’s current chairwoman, and Karin Furno. Both are up for re-election this year.
Members of the five-member Board of Selectmen are elected for three-year staggered terms. Selectmen Paul J. Savage and Thomas Petrowicz’s terms expire next year, and Selectman Charles G. Poulin’s term expires in 2010. There are also two four-year seats on the Blackstone-Millville Regional School Committee — one Millville post and one Blackstone post – up for grabs in April. McCutcheon was the target of a recall attempt last year by a group known as The Patriots. That attempt failed after the group came up short by failing to collect enough signatures to force a recall election. The group needed to collect 20 percent - or 360 - of the town’s 1,800 registered voters, but only managed to obtain 100 signatures. Also up for grabs in the election is one three-year term on the Board of Health; one five-year term on the Planning Board; and the three-year position of highway surveyor, which is currently held by longtime Highway Surveyor John F. Dean. The ballot will also feature a three-year seat and one-year seat for Trustee of Soldiers/Veterans Memorial Park (veteran); one three-year term and one two-year unexpired term on the Library Board of Trustees; and one the three-year position of tree warden. Nomination papers became available Jan. 14 and the deadline to return papers to the town clerk’s office is by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19. Candidates circulating nomination papers must obtain a minimum of 20 signatures if they are running for town positions. Candidates for the Regional School Committee need 35 signatures. The last day to withdraw nomination papers is Wednesday, March 5. The deadline to register to vote in the annual election is by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18. The last day to for candidates to file financial reports (8 days prior) is Monday, March 31, and the last day to obtain absentee ballot is Thursday, April 3. The deadline to file recount papers is April 17, and the last day for candidates to file financial reports (30 days after) is May 7. Withdrawal papers must be filed with the town clerk’s office and must be notarized. Regional candidates can file withdrawal papers at the regional school superintendent’s office. Regional candidates must also file a notarized statement of candidacy with the town clerk’s office from their town. |
