By SANDY McGEE BURRILLVILLE — A mother and son are unable to return to their home after a fire broke out Wednesday evening in a single family, two-story house in Harrisville. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Firefighters were first called to the residential house at 445 East Ave. in Harrisville at approximately 6:17 p.m. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke in the building upon arrival, according to Austin O’Keefe, a volunteer firefighter for the Harrisville Fire Department. O’Keefe was one of the first responders at the scene. “When we got there, there was very heavy smoke in the building,” he said. The fire was put under control within a half-hour, according to Fire Chief Mark St. Pierre of the Harrisville Fire Department. Two residents, a mother and her adult son, were able to exit the building to safety before firefighters and rescue arrived. They were later transported by ambulance to a local hospital for a medical evaluation, according to the fire chief. The mother and son have since been treated and released, said St. Pierre. The family’s pet dog was also able to escape the dwelling. “Everybody was alright,” said O’Keefe. The house sustained heavy smoke and water damage, according to officials. The house cannot be occupied in its current state, according to St. Pierre. The fire’s cause and origin is unknown at this time and currently under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office. |
