By MICHAEL PARENTE Sports writer WOONSOCKET – The undefeated Mounties needed every last second to avoid a stunning upset in their playoff opener.
Kyle Beauchamp scored the game-winning goal with 33 seconds remaining in overtime Friday as top-seeded Mount Saint Charles rallied to beat Moses Brown, 5-4, in Game 1 of the Division I boys’ hockey semifinals at Adelard Arena. The fifth-seeded Quakers, who upset La Salle in the quarterfinals, were just six minutes from pulling off another shocker in their inaugural season in Division I, but Trevor Plante scored at the 8:24 mark to even the score. With the clock winding down in overtime, Tim Coffey fired a shot that deflected off goaltender Nicholas Candelmo’s pads and into the slot, where Beauchamp scored on a backhand to put the Mounties on the cusp of another trip to the finals. They’ll aim for the sweep Saturday night at 7:30 in Game 2 at Cranston. The Quakers lost despite an outstanding effort from Candelmo, who stopped 68 shots. Moses Brown silenced the crowd at Adelard and took an early lead with two goals in the first six minutes of the game, but, as expected, the Mounties fought back in the second period. Jim Fuoroli cut Moses Brown’s lead in half when he stole the puck from Derek Army in the neutral zone and beat goaltender Candelmo on a breakaway just 2:06 into the period. Fuoroli hesitated briefly to catch Candelmo off balance and then wrapped the puck around the goalie’s outstretched glove for his first goal of the postseason. The senior forward struck again just 53 seconds later on a rebound to even the score. John Guay fired an awkward wrist shot from the point that fluttered in the air momentarily and short-hopped Candelmo before bouncing off the goalie’s chest. The subsequent rebound bounced outside of the crease, where Fuoroli poked in the loose puck to tie the game. Another rebound gave the Mounties the lead later in the period. Candelmo dropped to his knees to stop Robert VanWinter’s slap shot, but the rebound slid out toward the slot. Cameron Hadfield gathered the puck, made a quick move to his right and slipped it past Candelmo to put Mount in front, 3-2, with 8:06 remaining in the period. The lead didn’t last long thanks to a rare mistake by Mount goalie Jason San Antonio. After making a save on a shot by Ross Scherma, San Antonio tried to clear the puck to an open teammate near the point, but Army intercepted the pass and scored quickly to tie the game at the 7:43 mark – his second goal of the game. Less than a minute later, the Quakers retook the lead at 4-3 when Matthew Church scored on a rebound in front of the net with 6:36 left in the second. Moses Brown took the lead into the intermission despite being out-shot, 41-20, through the first two periods. The Mounties unleashed a barrage of shots on Candelmo at the start of the third, but the senior goaltender stood his ground. He stuffed Guay on a breakaway after Ross Scherma turned the puck over with 9:01 to go and then turned away Fuoroli on the ensuing face-off by moving quickly to his left to guard the post. Mount finally broke through when Coffey found Plante open in the slot for the game-tying goal with 6:34 remaining. *** Moses Brown 2 - 1 - 2 - 0 - --4 Mount 0 - 3 - 1 –1 -- 5 First period – Q, Andrew Kacz (Derek Army, Zachary Packer) 1:39; Q, Army (Kacz) 6:10.
