Another bomb threat - this time in Burrillville E-mail
Thursday, 27 March 2008

BURRILLVILLE — On the same day as the evacuation of Woonsocket High School and the Woonsocket Area Career and Technical Center, school officials in Burrillville also took steps after receiving a bomb threat.

Police said they believe there is no connection between the Woonsocket and Burrillville threats.
School officials discovered a written note left in a bathroom at Burrillville High School on Wednesday afternoon around 1:30 p.m., according to police. The note indicated that “there will be a bomb” during Thursday night’s parent and teacher conferences scheduled at the high school, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Burrillville School Department.
The high school was not evacuated on Wednesday, but school officials quickly notified police of the threat.
“We called in the State Bomb Squad and had the dogs check the school,” said Lt. Kevin S. San Antonio of the Burrillville Police Department. “The administration checked the children’s bags.”
The State Bomb Squad, equipped with bomb-sniffing dogs, swept the high school building on East Avenue in Harrisville after students were dismissed on Wednesday afternoon. No evidence of a bomb was found, according to police.
On Thursday morning, student bags were searched before they entered the school. Teachers were also asked to check their classrooms for any unusual or out-of-place items.
No one was allowed into the building until just prior to the start of the parent and teacher conferences, which began at 5 p.m.
Beginning on Thursday, school officials also administered steps to more closely supervise student movement within the building.
Burrillville police also said they would station officers within the area on Thursday night.
“These steps are taken in consultation with the Burrillville Police Department and the State Bomb Squad,” according to the school department’s statement. “The primary concern of everyone involved is to protect the safety of everyone who enters, attends or works in the school. The school administration and Burrillville Police Department are working on additional steps to be taken to insure the safety of everyone in the school and to try and prevent these events from reoccurring.”
According to the school department, this threat follows several others received recently by school officials. Administration at Burrillville High School has received a total of five bomb threats this year, including four during the last month to six weeks, said Burrillville Superintendent of Schools Steven Welford.
“An active investigation is currently underway regarding not only the latest threat, but several other threats that have occurred recently,” according to the school department’s statement. “There are significant criminal and school penalties associated with making threats to the public safety in a school and the school administration and police are committed to prosecuting anyone involved in making these threats to the fullest extent possible under the law.
“Unfortunately, this recent spate of bomb threats has needlessly interrupted the education of the students of Burrillville High School, and caused a great deal of stress for the students, their families and the staff who work at the high school.”
“We are working with the school department to see what we have to do to resolve this issue,” said San Antonio. “It is an ongoing investigation. This (bomb threats) seems to be happening all over the state.”
Also on Wednesday afternoon, school officials in Woonsocket received a phone call from an individual who stated that a bomb was inside Woonsocket High School.
Officials quickly evacuated the high school on Cass Avenue and the Woonsocket Area Career and Technical Center on Aylsworth Avenue.
The State Bomb Squad also responded and swept the high school, where they discovered no evidence of an explosive device. Police determined the threat to be a hoax.
