WOONSOCKET — A 17-year-old city man escaped injury but lost $80 in cash when he was allegedly robbed at knife-point and threatened with a handgun by a North Attleboro couple holding him for a time in their car. The couple, Diane R. Dufault, 48, of 536 High St., North Attleboro, and Dale E. O’Connell, 44, of the same address, are alleged by police to have confronted the city youth over a money matter as he walked on Cottage Street just before 3 p.m. Sunday.
Dufault and O’Connell are charged with felony counts of robbery, assault with a dangerous weapon and kidnapping over the incident after police located them on Monday and took them into custody without incident, police said.
The youth told police the couple threatened him with a knife initially and forced him into 2007 blue Toyota Solara where Dufault, an acquaintance, began to demand that he pay her for some damage that he allegedly had done to the car.
The woman repeatedly opened the glove compartment to show him a semi-automatic handgun inside while continuing to make her demands, according to police.
She then threatened him again with the knife, police said.
Fearing for his life, the youth gave the couple the $80 in cash he had on him at the time and jumped out of the car, police said.
The couple fled the scene Sunday and Police Sgt. Mark Cabral and Patrolman Irwin Harris located them in the car while they were parked on Dana Street at 10:52 p.m. on Monday.
During a search of the Toyota, police found a quantity of crack cocaine in the car, and subsequently charged the couple with felony possession of cocaine.
They are being held at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston while awaiting hearings on the charges, police said.
