BURRILLVILLE – During the scrimmages games and the early part of the league season, the Mount St. Charles’ bats have been somewhat silenced by the unseasonable cold temperatures.

With the weather more suitable for baseball the last few days, the Mounties have been heating up inside the batter’s box. Just a day after routing Davies Tech, Mount did the same to defending Division II state champion Burrillville on Wednesday, belting out 13 hits en route to an 11-0 rout at Eccleston Field.
The Broncos went to work early, scoring five runs in the opening inning. Backed by a solid, six-inning effort from starter Ryan Pangborn, the Mounties had little worry the remainder of the afternoon. Four players had multiple-hit games, including a trio from Chris Ford and John Guay.
“Historically, Mount bats start coming alive with the warm weather,” said MSC head coach Tom Seaver, whose squad (3-1 overall and 2-1 in II-North) unleashed 12 hits in an 11-3 win over Davies. “We had yesterday, a warmer day, we scored 11 runs. And today, a warmer day, and we scored 11 runs. Our bats are starting to coming alive.”
For Burrillville, the setback is their second straight loss. They are 2-2 in the division. The Broncos suffered a 4-3 loss to North Smithfield on Monday. Head coach Skee Carter expected a few bumps along the way from his 2007 titlist after losing most of his starting lineup to graduation.
“We lost seven of our nine starters from last year,” Carter said. “We got the hockey players out late. We got five starters who came out with only a week of practice. We’re hoping to get better as the year goes on.”
In his first start of the season, Burrillville pitcher Jordan Grosso struggled right from the beginning. The first six batters for the Mounties’ got on base with Ford and Guay setting the tone with back-to-back singles. Hayward followed with a walk, Ryan Pangborn was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run. An RBI single by Steve Gomes and a two-run double from Josh Pangborn would add to Grosso’s misery.
Grosso eventually settled down and was taken out in the fourth inning after the Mounties’ first three batters reached base in a three-run frame.
With the league shortened, and teams forced to play at least three games per week, Carter felt he had no choice but to leave Grosso in longer than he would have liked.
“Three games a week, you have to leave your starting pitcher in,” he said. “The reliever (Nick Harriman) we brought in wasn’t even a (varsity) pitcher last year. He did a good job, but three games a week are tough.”
Pangborn, a junior, allowed just five hits and struck out seven before he was taken out after the sixth inning because of a high pitch count. About the only time the righthander had trouble was in the initial inning. But with leadoff Jon Henault (walk) and Kyle Van Rossum (single) on second and third and one out, he got out of the jam by fanning the next two batters.
“It was his first start of the year and he struggled a little bit. But he needed the innings and he worked himself into a nice groove,” Seaver said.”He looked pretty good at the end.”
Josh Pangborn and Ryan Levesque each had two hits for the Mounties. In all, seven players made contact and five had at least an RBI. The score could have actually been a little higher if not for Eccleston’s fence-less field. Hayward, Ford and Ryan Pangborn each had mammoth shots that covered 300-plus feet.
“We struggled a little bit at the beginning of the season with our bats,” Guay said. “I think with the warm weather, we’ll slowly come around. When we’re hitting, we’re a really tough team to beat…Our bats are starting to come around at the right time.”
