By SANDY McGEE Don’t forget to vote this Tuesday. The special general election to fill the Senate District 20 (Woonsocket and Cumberland) seat will be held on Tuesday at polling locations in both towns.
Rep. Roger Picard will be the only individual on the ballot for the special general election. Picard won a special primary in March after defeating Thomas J. Scully of Cumberland and Rosina L. Hunt of Woonsocket. Picard, who is serving his eighth term in the House for District 51, Woonsocket, has been employed as an attendance officer and social worker for the Woonsocket School Department for 11 years. He is a 1975 graduate of Woonsocket High School; a 1979 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, where he received two bachelor’s degrees; and a 1995 graduate of Rhode Island College, where he received a master’s degree in social work. He has also served as a member of the Woonsocket Autumnfest Committee. The Senate seat for District 20 was left vacant after the death of Sen. Roger Badeau in January. Badeau was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1985. He was chairman of the Committee on Labor since 1992, and a member of the Senate Housing and Municipal Government Committee. Rhode Island’s general laws give the Secretary of State the authority to set special elections under certain circumstances. Polls will open in Woonsocket from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and in Cumberland from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Voting locations in Woonsocket and Cumberland have been combined and changed for this special election.
