WOONSOCKET — A 23-year-old city man escaped injury early Thursday when the heavy-duty SUV he was driving allegedly sped up the hill on Vose Street and struck a stone wall and nearby house. Aaron J. Kwandranc, of 294 Front St., was alleged to have fled the scene following the 1:29 a.m. crash. He was found by police walking on Vose near Erie Street a short time later, police said.
Witnesses told police they had heard a vehicle racing up the hill at a high rate of speed just prior to the crash.
One, a resident of the neighborhood, reported looking out the window after hearing the noise and watched as the black 2002 GMC Denali become airborne just before it struck the stone wall at 242 Vose St. at least twice and continued on to strike the building’s foundation.
The owner of the property, Brian A. Dasilva, reported $5,000 damage to the foundation of the home, $5,000 damage to a small roof covering at the property, and $4,000 in additional damages to two sections of wall and a section of fence.
No one in the dwelling was reported hurt in the crash.
A city building inspector was called to the scene to assess the damage to the home and ruled the building safe for occupation, police said.
The SUV, valued at $20,000, sustained heavy damage to its front section, according to police.
Kwandranc, who listed himself as without employment, was suspected of being intoxicated at the scene but refused to submit to a chemical test for alcohol, police said. The driver denied involvement in the alleged crash but investigating officers found him to be the registered owner of the SUV, and also located debris from the vehicle on him during a pat-down search, police said.
He was subsequently charged with drunken driving, a first offense, refusal to submit to a test for alcohol, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, and also for duty in an accident resulting in damage to highway fixtures.
Police said airbags in the SUV deployed as a result of the impact with the wall and home. Kwandranc was processed on the charges at the police station and arraigned on the charges later Thursday in District Court.
