Races for administrator, two council seats on tap in Lincoln E-mail
Wednesday, 25 June 2008

By JON BAKER

LINCOLN — Those with political aspirations for November’s town election had until 4 p.m., Wednesday to make their intentions official.

Town Clerk Karen Allen noted it was a rather slow afternoon, as the last candidate applied at about 2:30 p.m., and — with a chuckle — mentioned that was good news for her.
“Less paperwork,” she noted.
Not surprisingly, the most interesting developments on this final “Declaration Day” — the last of three in a time frame beginning Monday — came in the race for town administrator. Republican incumbent T. Joseph Almond decided a few weeks ago that he would seek another term, but four others have chosen to throw their hats into the ring.
John D. Barr II (of 14 Sir Charles Road) and John J. Cullen (of 99 Old River Road), both Democrats, scripted press releases a couple of months ago as to their desire to run against Almond.
According to the Town Clerk’s list handed out Wednesday following the deadline, Democrat Louis E. Azar (1069 Great Road) and Independent town activist James B. Spooner (1566 Lonsdale Ave.) also have decided to run for the administratorship.
Because Barr II, Cullen and Azar are all Democrats, they will battle in a special party primary slated for Tuesday, Sept. 9. Azar ran against Almond and Dean Lees Jr. in the previous election.
As for Town Council seats, President Jeremiah T. O’Grady declined in May an opportunity to run again in District 1 (Saylesville), though Timothy McMahon, a Democrat residing at 11 Preserved Arnold Court, will take on Independent Arthur S. Russo of 23 Carriage Dr. for that slot.
The only other competition will come in District 3 (Lime Rock), where incumbent Keith E. Macksoud, an Independent living at 1817 Old Louisquisset Pike, will oppose newcomer and Democrat Joseph Paiva of 451 Angell Road.
In three other districts, incumbents will run unopposed. They include Democrat John Flynn of 23 Holiday Drive (District 2-Lonsdale); Democrat James Jahnz of 5 Samuel Stephens Drive (District 4-Albion/Quinville/LimeRock); and Independent Ronald McKenna of 11 Blue Mist Drive (District 5-Manville).
There are two district school committee (considered non-partisan) seats open. In District 2, John C. Zangari of 39 Boulevard Ave. will take on Tracey A. Cavanaugh of 6 Ashley Drive, while Elizabeth Robson-Black (residing at 12 Great Meadows Lane) will run unopposed.
Three residents will battle for two at-large (town-wide) school committee slots, among them current chairperson Maryanne H. Roll (of 11 Lord Fox Run); Julie M. Zito (of 335 Albion Road); and Deborah A. Ambeault (of 11 Front St.).
As for the Water Commission, both Republican Jean L. Kay (of 5 Holiday Drive) and Democrat Frederick R. Conklin will be unopposed in Districts 2 and 4, respectively.
