BELLINGHAM — A town man was arrested after allegedly assaulting a police officer during the town’s Fourth of July fireworks display.
Richard J. Clinton, 23, of 47 North St., was arrested Friday around 10:10 p.m. at 130 Blackstone St., near the football field, according to police. Police discovered Clinton allegedly trespassing in an area taped off for the fireworks display on Friday evening, said Lt. Kevin Ranieri of the Bellingham Police Department. As an officer attempted to apprehend him, Clinton allegedly “began swinging his arms,” according to Ranieri. A scuffle ensued, in which Clinton allegedly physically struck the officer, said police. No injuries were reported. After being handcuffed, Clinton apparently tried to pull away and yelled into the crowd of people attending the fireworks display, said police. The crowd included several children, according to Ranieri. Clinton was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace. He is scheduled for arraignment Monday morning in Milford District Court. |
