WOONSOCKET ---- Fortunately for Cool Air Creations, the Rhode Island American Legion playoffs are conducted on a best-of-three basis.
Otherwise, the Woonsocket team could plan on some serious beach time.
Shoreline of North Kingstown capitalized on 14 hits, 10 walks and four errors for a 19-9 victory last night in Game 1 of a semifinal series at Renaud Field.
The game was called after seven innings because of the league’s “mercy rule.” Game 2 is set for 5 p.m. tonight at Lischio Field in Slocum. Early on, Shoreline (12-12) and Cool Air Creations (16-7) basically engaged in a game of “you-score-I-score” commencing when each team hung two runs on the board in the first.
Shoreline loaded the bases with one out when Dave Boelter singled and Dave D’Erricco and Cody Normand walked.
Austin Brown hit a smash to third and Jim Castonguay stepped on third for a force as Boelter scored.
Normand then stole third and trotted home when catcher Derek Mayer’s throw sailed into left field for an error.
Cool Air Creations needed minimal time to tie it in the bottom of the first.
Kyle Lacasse led with a bad-hop double and scored on Justin Rainville’s double to left-center. Rainville then raced home from second on a wild pitch by Boelter.
The deadlock lasted only until the third when Shoreline grabbed a 3-2 lead in somewhat bizarre fashion.
Boelter drew a leadoff walk from Nick Nardowy, zipped to third on a wild pitch and scored when Mayer again made an errant throw.
Nardowy, meanwhile, left after throwing one pitch to Dave D’Errico because he was spiked while attempting to break up a double play in the second and was replaced by Ryan Pangborn.
Cool Air Creations missed your basic golden opportunity to score in the third when Rainville doubled with one out and advanced to third on a wild pitch. But Boelter retired the next two batters with the ball not leaving the infield.
Shoreline rewarded Boelter for his efforts by scoring three runs in the fourth which increased the North Kingstown-based team’s lead to 6-2.
Ryan Morris singled with one out and reached second on a wild pitch. Matt Rhieu followed with a bouncer to the mound and Pangborn had Morris trapped off second. But Pangborn made a wild throw to second which allowed Morris to return to the bag.
That miscue proved costly when Ed Apice lined an RBI single to center field and Boelter followed with a two-run double to left-center.
Cool Air Creations chipped two runs off its deficit in the bottom of the fourth
on a walk to Ryan Coffey, Pangborn’s double, a wild pitch and Mayer’s groundout to shortstop.
But following a scoreless fifth, Shoreline clipped Pangborn for three runs in the sixth which produced a 9-4 lead.
Apice beat out an infield hit, Boelter walked and D’Errico crushed a triple to left center - and came home on a wild pitch.
Cool Air Creations refused to buckle, however, and tagged Boelter for two runs in the sixth, one scoring on an error and the other on Rainville’s sacrifice fly to center.
But Shoreline broke the game wide open during a nine-run seventh inning which threatened never to end.
Among other things, Shoreline scored on a two-run double by Rhieu and a sacrifice fly by Rainville.
Cool Air Creations gave it one last shot in the seventh when it loaded the bases with two outs. Melvin Torres drew a walk to force in one run and Kyle Lacasse ripped a two-run single to make it 19-9. But Boelter retired the final batter which sent the series back to North Kingstown with Shoreline enjoying a one-game advantage.
