NORTH SMITHFIELD — The girl who died in a flash flood in New Hampshire on Thursday has been identified as 7-year-old Kaitlyn Ferra of North Smithfield.
The family was swept downstream in flooding at a campground in Ashland. Kaitlyn’s body was found in the family's crumpled SUV, which was located about 1,000 yards downstream near the Ames Brook Campground. The mother, Donna (Soly) Ferra was found in the middle of the flood waters, clinging to a tree and holding onto her 5-year-old son, Cameron. They had been in the water for more than an hour. Witnesses said the girl’s father, Brandon stepped out of the car to check conditions just before the vehicle was swept away, then jumped into the water in a vain attempt to save his family. His wife and 5-year-old son were rescued after clinging to a tree in the raging water for more than an hour Thursday evening. — With Associated Press reports |
