WOONSOCKET — A man was arrested on two counts of being a habitual shoplifter after he came out of a fitting room at Sears on Diamond Hill Road Sunday wearing just a little too much underwear.
Police said Nicholas Mangiardi, 43, of no permanent address, allegedly opened a package of T-shirts in the fitting room, put them all on, and then tried to walk out the store without paying for them. He was detained by store security at about 1:40 p.m. Store security officers said Mangiardi was also in possession of a Sony radio he took into the women’s department, cutting it from its plastic packaging with a knife. Total value of the merchandise: about $27, police said. Mangiardi was slapped with the felony charges because of numerous prior arrests for shoplifting. He has a criminal record dating back to the late 1990s for a variety of offenses, including escape from the Adult Correctional Institutions. In 2006, a Superior Court judge sentenced him to five years in prison, with one to serve, and four suspended, with probation, for felony shoplifting, according to the Rhode Island Judiciary Web site. |
