By SANDY McGEE CUMBERLAND — A special two-day rededication ceremony for Cumberland High School will be held this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27 and 28, at the high school on Mendon Road.
The ceremony celebrates the completion of a major capital improvement project for the high school known as CHS 2010. “Over the past several years, the taxpayers of Cumberland have provided significant resources to the district, and specifically to Cumberland High School, to ensure that faculty and students could teach and learn in a 21st century learning environment,” said Superintendent of Schools Donna A. Morelle in a press release. “As a result of these resources and the dedication of many individuals who have served tirelessly to complete this project, we are now ready to showcase the renovated high school campus.” Members of the community are welcome to attend the rededication ceremony and tour “Cumberland High School’s 21st century learning environment.” The event will be held on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The special event commemorating the project’s completion will include a special ceremony, displays of student work and tours of the newly renovated high school. “Through this celebration, we hope to step together into a new era of education in Cumberland, marked by the achievement of goals that many thought were impossible to reach just a short time ago,” Morelle said. The two-day event will begin on Saturday at noon with opening remarks. Richard Lynch, former Cumberland High School principal, will serve as master of ceremonies. The program will feature musical performances by the Cumberland High School band, under the direction of Lisa Koziol-Kenyon, and the CLEF Singers, under the direction of Susan Alves. Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts and Attorney General Patrick J. Lynch will serve as guest speakers. Mayor Daniel J. McKee will present a special proclamation. Following will be a ceremonial key presentation, which will be led by Morelle; Lisa Beaulieu, School Committee member; Dorothy C. Gould, principal of Cumberland High School; Kathleen DiModica, faculty representative for the high school; and Krista McCann, president of Cumberland High School’s Student Government. Many other local and state officials, as well as all former high school administrators, staff and Cumberland High School alumni, have also been invited to attend. Major construction on the CHS 2010 project, which took several years to complete, came to an end this summer, two years ahead of schedule. The 46 year old high school’s many new additions now include multimedia labs, a Performing and Fine Arts Wing and a new 30,000 square foot, two story Science Wing. The additions, which will be open to the public during the rededication ceremony, also include new classrooms, 600 new computers for students, the 20,000 square foot Wellness Center, a major expansion to the cafeteria and much more. The rededication committee has been working since January on the celebration. The committee is co-chaired by Gould, current principal of the high school, and former principal Richard Lynch. Members of the committee also include Alves, Beaulieu, Cynthia Chabot, Nikita Duke, E. Craig Dwyer, Linda Dwyer, Marilyn Hilton, Lorraine Hynes, Joyce Hindle-Koutsogiane, Krista McCann, McKee, Morelle, Kelley Nickson-Morris, Anthony Nobrega and Patricia Tweedie. |
