CUMBERLAND — The driver who died in a one-car accident in the Pine Swamp Road area Saturday night has been identified as a 23-year-old Cumberland resident who worked as a painter for a Warwick auto body shop.

According to police, Marc Pinzon was driving a vehicle with three passengers when the accident occurred around 1:06 a.m. Saturday. Sgt. George Stansfield, who was on duty that morning, said officers responded to a witness’s call at approximately 1:13 a.m.
Stansfield said Pinzon’s vehicle had been traveling east on Pine Swamp Road at the time. The cause of the mishap is still undetermined, and Stansfield said it would remain unknown “for a good month” while accident reconstruction work is under way.
However, he confirmed the basic details of the incident, which he said occurred shortly beyond the intersection of Pine Swamp and Diamond Hill roads.
“Upon entering Diamond Hill Road southbound, (the vehicle) lost control and struck a curb on an island and overturned, coming to rest on its roof,” Stansfield said. “There were three other male passengers in the vehicle that were all transported to the hospital.”
The passengers’ injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening. They were identified only as males, two age 25, one age 23, all believed to be Cumberland residents. Stansfield said the group is believed to have been coming into town from an unknown location in Woonsocket.
Police think foul weather that night may have contributed to the accident.”We still have more witnesses to interview,” Stansfield said. “I can tell you that wet conditions were a contributing factor. We’re looking into speed being a factor as well.”
Stansfield said the department may know more after receiving a report from the State Medical Examiner’s office, which would include a toxicology finding. Stansfield pointed out that toxicology reports are done as a matter of course following fatal accidents, not because of any suspected substance abuse.
Family and friends of Pinzon could not be reached Tuesday. However, an obituary identified Pinzon as a 2003 Cumberland High School graduate who graduated from New England Tech in Warwick in 2005. A lifelong resident of Cumberland, he was employed at a body shop in Warwick, where he worked as a painter.
A funeral is scheduled for Thursday at 9 a.m. at the J.J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Cumberland, with a private burial to follow. Calling hours today are from +4 to 8 p.m.
