Members of Woonsocket’s Congregation B’nai Israel toss pieces of bread off the St. Paul Bridge in Blackstone into the Blackstone River Tuesday. The gesture symbolizes a casting away of one’s sins that marks Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Congregants include, from left, Peter Tedeschi, of Woonsocket; Edith Winick, of Bridgeport; Sandi Brenner, of Smithfield; David Brenner, in back, also of Smithfield; and Nomi Small, 12, and Avi Small, 15, both of Newton.
