WOONSOCKET — A teenager who was two months shy of his 18th birthday when police charged him in connection with a rash of business breaks this summer has been waived out of juvenile court so he can be tried as an adult.

Shayne E. McClair of 100 Asylum St. was re-booked at police headquarters Monday on 22 counts of burglary, conspiracy and breaking and entering. He was later arraigned in District Court and ordered held without bail at the ACI pending a hearing Oct. 21. Earlier in the day, he had been waived out of Family Court in Providence.
McClair, who was arrested on July 30, turned 18 on Sept. 24, according to police reports.
The attorney general’s office said previously that it would seek to try McClair as an adult because the longest sentence he would face as a juvenile — about two years — was inadequate to punish him for the charges he is facing.
Police say McClair and an alleged accomplice, Melvin Aponte, 18, of 199 Bourdon Blvd., broke into a dozen homes and businesses during the month of July, stealing cash, computers, home electronics, cigars, cigarettes, cell phones and other belongings worth some $4,500 in all.
The targets included the Woonsocket Convenience Store, Joe’s Hairstyles, Ronzio’s Pizza, Al’s Place, Gulf Express, Quik Mart and Serio’s Pizza, as well as three residences on Summit Street and Bourdon Boulevard, police said. In one break alone, at Gulf Express, the intruders allegedly made off with nearly $1,300 in cash.
It was about 4 a.m. on July 30 when police responding to a burglar alarm reportedly cornered McClair inside the Quik Mart convenience store on Mason Street, wearing a face mask and standing amid the smashed-up parts of a cash register strewn about the floor. At the scene, police found a claw-style hammer and a pry bar McClair and Aponte allegedly used to force their way in.
Arrested Aug. 4, Aponte remains held in lieu of bail at the ACI on charges stemming from the alleged crime spree. His case has been referred to a grand jury for consideration, according to court records.
