By RUSS OLIVO WOONSOCKET — Four people, including two sisters, were arrested Monday night after they allegedly attacked two police officers who were investigating a report that someone was shooting a BB-gun from the window of an apartment above a downtown convenience store.
Krystle Alyssia Martin, 21, of 113 Main St., and Sonja Martin, 19, of Webster, Mass., were taken into custody on charges of assault, obstructing and resisting arrest. A boy, age 16, and a girl, 17, both of Webster, were arrested on similar charges, according to police reports. Patrolmen George McMann and Michael Flood said they were dispatched to the area of Main and Fountain streets about 7:20 p.m. for a report of someone shooting a BB-gun at cars. Marcotte surveilled the area for a few minutes before he saw a boy firing a gun from the window of Krystle Martin’s apartment, above the Liberty Market, he reported. After a brief investigation, police said they identified the 16-year-old Webster boy as the alleged shooter. But when they tried to take him into custody, the other females allegedly began loudly protesting and physically assaulting either McMann, Flood, or both of the officers. Finally, the boy at the center of the dispute joined in the melee. Police said a number of punches were thrown in the fracas, but eventually all four individuals were handcuffed and taken into custody with the help of additional officers who were called in as backup. No one was seriously injured. No one in the apartment is facing any charges in connection with shooting the weapon, however. Police said they found two vehicles parked in the municipal lot across the street from Martin’s apartment with BB-like windshield damage, but neither of the owners wanted to press charges. Initially, police couldn’t find the weapon that McMann allegedly saw being fired from the apartment window. As the police were getting ready to leave the area, however, a neighboring tenant led Patrolman Kenneth Marcotte to the weapon, and two boxes of BBs, under a mattress in her apartment. Marcotte was one of the backup officers who had been called to the scene. The tenant told Marcotte that a few minutes earlier, Krystle Martin had asked her to hide the gun and ammunition in her apartment, located down the hall from Martin’s, the officer reported. The tenant said she didn’t know why Martin had asked her to do so and didn’t know police would be coming to look for them. |
