By RUSS OLIVO WOONSOCKET — A 15-year-old boy came to Woonsocket High School Thursday with a gas-powered BB-gun, ammunition and firecrackers, police said.
The youth was charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds and possession of fireworks at about 12:20 p.m. He was also suspended from school and told he cannot come back unless his parents bring him in. School Resource Officer John Raymond reported that he began looking for the alleged offender when a teacher told him someone might have the weapon in school. The teacher, who told Raymond he wanted to remain anonymous, said another student had told him the boy was trying to sell the gun in cooking class. Raymond later tracked down the gun-carrying boy to another class and asked him to step outside. Raymond said the boy dropped a camouflage-style backpack on the floor in which he found the gun, a 2,000-count box of 6mm ammunition and a cartridge filled with carbon dioxide gas needed to power the weapon. The gun wasn’t loaded, said Raymond. The boy was taken to police headquarters, where a routine search yielded two packages of firecrackers in his pants pocket, Raymond said. |
