Bullets hit apartments on Union Street E-mail
Friday, 14 November 2008

WOONSOCKET — The crash of bullets flying through the windows and walls of their apartments sent two city families fleeing their homes in fear Friday evening.

No one was hurt in the suspected drive-by shootings, but the occupants of 96 Union St. said they were frightened enough by the attack to move in immediately with relatives. Police learned of the 6 p.m. shooting through a 911 call, dispatching both uniform and detective units to investigate.
Alfredo Rodriguez, 26, said he didn’t know why someone would fire shots at his home, discussing the incident as he and his wife Jessinya Garcia packed their daughters, ages 7, 2, and 1, and son 5, into their car to leave.
“I’m nervous right now and I know I’m not coming back over here,” Rodriguez said. He said he did not have problems with anyone and did not know why someone would shoot at his apartment, on the first floor of the building, and at the apartment of his brother, Miguel Rodriguez, on the second floor.
One of the bullets passed through a kitchen wall and crossed the room, lodging near the ceiling, Alfredo said. Another bullet smashed through a window of the kitchen, also along an upward trajectory, he said.
The couple’s children, who were in the parlor, were not hurt by the gunfire or the breaking glass, Rodriguez and his wife said.
“I’m not coming back. It could have been worse,” Garcia said. “Something could have happened to one of my kids.”
Miguel Rodriguez, 28, said he and his wife, Valerie Dejesus, were also leaving the dwelling after the shooting. The couple had three young children at home at the time.
The bullet that struck their apartment passed through the bedroom the youngsters were in at the time, he said. A second bullet went through the wall near the apartment’s hallway.
While police were investigating the possibility that the shots from a 9 mm weapon had come from a vehicle on the street below, Rodriguez said he hadn’t heard a car before the bullets struck.
“I heard nothing but the gunshots and the bullets breaking the glass windows,” he said.
Valerie DeJesus said she had just gone to drop off her other son when the attack occurred. She came home to find the incident under investigation by  police.
“I don’t know why someone would do this. We don’t even go out anywhere or talk to anybody,” she said as she and Rodriguez left to join their children at a relative’s home.
Police continued to investigate the shooting incident Friday night and would not discuss whether they had any leads.
Members of the Department’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation unit could be seen in front of the dwelling checking the line of fire. Other BCI officers photographed the damage inside.
Police were reported to have recovered at least two shell casings from a 9 mm gun at the scene, and had located at least four bullet holes in the side of the apartment building fronting Union Street.
Officers checked the length of Union Street for evidence and could be seen talking to area residents as the investigation continued.
