BURRILLVILLE -- Local residents Tayrn Lapierre and Ashley O’Donnell saw their dreams come true on Saturday night when they faced off in a college hockey game at Levy Rink.
Both Lapierre and O'Donnell learned the game of hockey in the Burrillville Jr. Hockey League. They played on the same Burrillville travel teams in Mites, Squirts and Bantams.
At the time, there were no girls team so they both played in the boys’ league. They were the only two girls on their teams until they went to play high school hockey.
Taryn played hockey at Mount St.  Charles Academy and Ashley played at La Salle Academy. Both were outstanding players and leading scorers on their respective teams during high school.
Taryn was All-State and All-Division for each of her 4 high school years. She was also MVP for playoffs her junior year and team MVP for her senior year. She now plays for Division I Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Ct. At Sacred Heart she is continuing her education with a double major in Finance and Sports Management.
Ashley attained All-State and All-Division her last 3 years at La Salle Academy. She  now attends Nichols College in Dudley, MA. This year the Burrillville rink became Nichols’ home rink and they hosted Sacred Heart for the first time. At Nichols, Ashley is continuing her education with a major in Business Administration.
Currently many of the Rhode Island  Youth hockey programs have girls teams for beginners right up until they go to high school. The Woonsocket and Panther organizations have programs for the girls to play in right up to college. They both provide highly competitive select girls’ hockey that plays against some of the best competition in New England and beyond.
Lapierre and O’Donnell are great examples of how these local youth and high school programs are helping young girls learn the game of hockey and perhaps earn a college scholarship in the process.
