WOONSOCKET -- In a game Mount St. Charles co-coach Dave Belisle termed “the best I’ve seen in around 10 years,” the Mounties edged LaSalle College High School 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday to capture their own MSC Holiday Face-Off Tournament.
Kyle Beauchamp scored the winning goal with an assist from Trevor Plante. The goal came 10 seconds into the overtime period.
Mount had taken a 2-0 lead early in the game on goals by Evan Hoffman and Tim Doyle before LaSalle -- the defending tourney champion -- evened the score 11:08 into the third period on the second of two goals by Ross Denzi.
The game-winning score stunned the crowd at Adelard Arena as it came so quickly in overtime.
“Kyle scored on a beautiful pass from Trevor Plante,” Belisle said. “That’s one of the best games ever played in this building, the best one I’ve seen in around 10 years. It was unbelievable.
“Our goalie, Jason San Antonio, played a great game. He made the all-tournament team along with John Lace. Kyle was named Tournament Most Valuable Player.”
San Antonio made 29 saves in goal.
“He’s been so good this season,” Belisle said. “Jason has really come of age this season. He is just so focused on his game.
“Our kids played great,” Belisle concluded. “They beat a fast and strong team that had won its last seven games in this tournament. We hadn’t won this tourney in four years, mainly because the competition has been so strong. This year’s team looks very good.”
