WOONSOCKET - It seems any time that Mount St. Charles and Bay View square off on the ice, the two teams bring out the best in each other.
Saturday night was no exception.
In a tense and physical game from the opening face-off, neither team could find the back of the net in an 0-0 overtime tie at Adelard Arena. The game was the second straight contest between the two Division I powerhouses.
The Bengals defeated the Mounties, 2-1, last Saturday at the West Warwick Civic Center.
“Compared to last week, we definitely came out stronger,” said MSC head coach Amy Maguire, whose squad beat Bay View, 2-0, in their first meeting back on Jan. 3 “We had our opportunities.”
The two teams, who were even in shots on goal after two period at 15 apiece, played through a nail-biting third and overtime period.
With 15 seconds left in the third period, the Mounties avoided a prime chance by Bay View to score the first goal when it overcame a large scuffle from just outside the crease. Less than 10 seconds later, Mount’s Lauren Levesque had a 1-on-1 breakaway opportunity that was broken up inside the circles.
In the overtime period, Bay View’s Georgie Gouin unleashed a shot from the left circle with three minutes left that hit the crossbar and bounced away from the cage. Mount’s best chance for the game-winner came with a minute left when Erin McQuade’s slap shot was stopped by Bay View goalie Meg Colucci. For the game, Colucci finished with 32 saves. Mount keeper Kayla DiLorenzo turned away 28 shots.
“I do think that whenever we face each other it’s always a hard-fought game,” Maguire said. “It was pretty similar to a lot of game. We had our opportunities and they had their chances.”
The standings are still tight at the top of the division. Mount had 19 points with a record of 8-1-3, while Bay View is two point behind due to fewer games with an 8-1-1 mark.
