SMITHFIELD - A hot goalie proved to be the difference as North Smithfield’s season came to a close in a 3-1 loss to Mount Hope in the deciding game of the Division III semifinals Monday night. Chris Caouette scored the lone goal for the defending state titlist Northmen, scoring with just 1:13 left. Caouette's goal broke a 2-0 shutout by the Huskies. Mount Hope scored its final goal on an empty net with 30 seconds remaining. MH goalie Rob Gereau made 25 saves in the contest. “We were peppering the goalie a lot, he just made a lot of saves,” said North Smithfield goalie Paul Nadeau. “He was the difference. We had a lot of high-percentage shots, a lot of rebounds. He was able to get a lot of them.” Despite the setback, Nadeau have plenty of strong words for his squad. “They are just a great group of guys,” he said. “We have early-morning practices at five or six. Even as coaches, it’s tough to get motivated at that time and they were all there. They are just a great group of guys and that was the difference in our season. The good news for the Northmen is they’ll be losing just two players from this year’s team. “We still have the core coming back,” Nadeau said.
