Thursday, 19 March 2009

WOONSOCKET — Police are asking for the public's help in identifying a person who was seen attempting to use a stolen debit card at an ATM machine at the Citizens Bank branch on Social Street last month.

The perpetrator used the card about an hour after police investigated a report of a burglary at 78 Napoleon St., said Detective Lt. Eugene Jalette, spokesman for the police department. The victim, a 57-year-old woman, reported that someone broke into her house about 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 19.
The woman told police she heard a noise coming from her kitchen and locked herself in her bedroom for about an hour because she was afraid an intruder was in the house.
When the police arrived, they found a kitchen window had been opened and the victim's purse, with a debit card, cash and other personal items inside, was missing. The purse had been in the kitchen near the open window.
Someone tried to use the debit card at 2:46 a.m. that morning, according to Jalette.
Police obtained surveillance photos of the person who attempted to use the card at the bank. Anyone with information that can help the police identify the person is urged to contact Detective Sgt. Brad Scully, at 767-8870 or the department's tip-line, 769-4444. Callers need not give their names.
