WOONSOCKET -- The Woonsocket Soccer organization a member of Soccer Rhode Island has begun its spring competitive season. This season is run by the Rhode Island Youth Super Liga and is sanctioned by Soccer Rhode Island, the state’s national soccer association under the United States Youth Soccer Association.
USYS is the larges youth league organization in the United States registering over 3.5 million youths playing soccer. The Super Liga spring competitive is comprised of 481 teams from 32 different communities through out the state. Age divisions are Anchor division 1, Classic division 2 is divided into A & B, and then Rhody Division 3.
Saturday’s games began with the WYSA Woonsocket Soccer under 14 boys team playing in Classic 2B. This is last year’s under 12 team that had to move up to the under 14 although many could have stayed in the under 12 division.
Their first game was against a Chariho team. The WYSA team played well defensively by not allowing Chariho to score, and the offense paid off in the second half when Nathan Sengsavang scored the only goal of the game for a 1-0 victory.
The Woonsocket Soccer under 12 girls team is playing in the Rhody division. This team also had to move up to the under 12 division this year, many of the players could have played in the under 10 division.
Their first game was against Smithfield Soccer. The girls played a good game with a great performance by goal keeper Sabrina Dubois and Janee Vigne on defense. Although the WYSA team played well, it could not find the back of the net, and Smithfield went away with a 3-0 victory.
