BELLINGHAM — Police are now saying that the U.S. Postal Service truck involved in an accident on Monday was not backing out of a driveway as previously reported, but pulling out in a forward direction onto Pulaski Boulevard when it was struck by another vehicle.

Letter carrier John Spas, 49, of 17 Interval Drive, Cumberland, was driving onto Pulaski Boulevard when his mail truck was struck by another vehicle, a 1989 Toyota, said Bellingham Police Capt. Gerry Corriveau.
The Toyota, operated by Steven Kirchdorfer, 39, of Medway, Mass., apparently struck the rear end of the mail truck and pushed it into a nearby tree around 1 p.m., said police.
"He (Spas) did not back out of a driveway," Corriveau said. "He drove onto the street, facing forward on Pulaski Boulevard, when he was struck by one of the cars."
Police said Monday's wintry weather conditions did play a factor in the accident. "The weather conditions did have an effect," Corriveau said.
Spas was transported to Milford Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. He was listed in good medical condition on Tuesday. Kirchdorfer was not injured in the accident.
The investigation is ongoing and under the direction of the Bellingham Police Department. No one has been cited for the accident, said police.
