CUMBERLAND – Midway into his team’s Northern Division dual meet with Woonsocket High on Tuesday afternoon, Cumberland High coach Tom Kenwood saw exactly what he expected – a close back-and-forth battle with the Villa Novans.
After eight events, the Clippers held just a two-point edge at 35-33.
“I figured Woonsocket was the team to beat,” admitted Kenwood. “I thought maybe the meet could go two points either way.”
Thankfully for the Clippers, there are the field events. While the neighboring rivals were battling it out on the track, Cumberland racked up the points in the field events, turning a close affair into a rather comfortable 90-64 victory at Tucker Field. Both teams easily beat Cranston East High in the tri-meet.
Highlighting the Clippers efforts outside the oval were multiple-winning efforts from senior teammates Dylan Faucher and Dave Linback.
In particular, Faucher shined on a sunny day of track and field at the Cumberland venue with wins in all three jumps. Faucher took the high jump with a personal best leap of 6 feet, 2 inches. He also attained PB of 41-1 ½ in taking the triple jump and 19-9 to achieve gold in the long jump.
“He just had a phenomenal day,” Kenwood said. “He just came back on the team last week. He’s just a phenomenal athlete. When he’s on, he has a day kind of like what you saw today.”
According to Kenwood, Faucher’s triumphs were crucial in the outcome due to the fact that the CHS coach felt his star athlete’s events were where he felt the Villa Novans were going to get a considerable amount of points.
“On paper, Woonsocket should have taken 1-2 in the high jump and 1-2 in the triple jump,” Kenwood said. “That didn’t happen. It’s not because they choked, Faucher just did great. Last week he was 36-9 in the triple jump, 18-4 in the long jump and 5-8 in the high jump.”
Linback collected a dozen points for the Blue and White, copping the hammer throw with a distance of 160-9 and the discus at 115-2.
He also was second to the Villa Novans’ Mateusz Kurowski (45-10) in the shot put with a heave 38-6 ½.  Cole Bentley led a sweep for Cumberland versus the Novans in the javelin with a toss of 148-10.
On the track, sprinter Brandon Aikens was another double-winner for the Clippers. In a close race with Woonsocket’s Carlos Ortiz, the speedy senior out-leaned his rival at the finish line with both runners clocking a time of 11.1 seconds. Aikens came back less than an hour later and defeated the Villa Novans’ Geoff Phaneuf in the 200 with a 23.5 clocking.
“I knew he would be tested in the 100,” Kenwood said. “I knew Carlos was pretty quick. He came back later and just blasted the 200.”
Woonsocket had a strong afternoon from senior Sean Ceccofiglio, who left the track with victories in the 110 and 300 hurdles, clocking times of 16.0 and 42.8 respectively. He also ran a leg on the Villa Novans’ winning 4x400 squad (3:44.0) of Chris Penso, Ortiz and Phaneuf, and finished third in the discus with a distance of 112-6.
Ceccofiglio estimates he trains at least three to four hours a week in the multiple events.
“It’s brutal. I train for running for about an hour and a half and then I go up and throw for two and a half hours,” he said. “But track is my life, I love it to death.”

Woonsocket downs Cumberland, Hope
CUMBERLAND – Woonsocket High continued its strong season on Tuesday with a sweep of Cumberland and Hope at Tucker Field.
Britney Lawson was a double-winner for the Villa Novans, capturing the hammer and the discus. Lawson won the hammer with a toss of 137-8 and let the discus fly a distance of 93-7.
Although he would have preferred a better outcome, Cumberland coach Chris Fernandes was not surprised by the Villa Novans’ victory. This year’s squad has more than 30 athletes.
“I knew Woonsocket would be strong,” he said. “(Head coach) Dan Richard has been doing a great job building the program. He has really done a good job, and it showed (today).”
Woonsocket, which improved to 7-1 for the season, also had wins from Kristen Cahill in the triple jump (31-1), Jeannette Kopac in the 800 (2:43.7) and Kristen Treganowan in the two-mile (13:41.4).
