By STEVE MAZZONE Call sports writer WARWICK — It's far too early to even think about the finals. But for season openers, it was a good start. Despite missing top player Peter DeAngelo due to an injury, solid play by all three lines — highlighted by an outstanding effort on the defense end — earned the Mount St. Charles boys' hockey team a satisfying 2-0 victory Friday night in a Division I contest at Thayer Arena.
"I thought it was a very sound game," MSC head coach Dave Belisle said. "I thought we played two really solid periods and we dominated play. I thought our puck movement was fantastic. We were hitting our checks to perfection." Although the Titans had their chances in the first two periods, including failing to capitalize on two breakaway attempts in the game's first 15 minutes, Mount's speedy skates appeared to be the difference in getting the edge. Not suprisingly, it scored both of its goals in those periods with Kyle Beauchamp and Jim Fouroli finding the net. "I never question my team's intensity. We work hard all week and bring it to the games on weekends," Toll Gate coach Dave Tober said. "But the first two periods they were faster than we were. We were leaving them loose pucks. We just came out quiet. It was our plan to come out hard. For some reason it didn't happen." Beauchamp scored his goal on a power play in the opening period. On a 2-on-1 opportunity, he took a feed from Josh Fattore and scored at the 3:53 mark. In a scuffle near the right circle, Fouroli was able to add the insurance goal when he blasted a shot past goalie Jacob Rinn. The Titans senior netminder finished with 33 saves. Mount made things happen offensively minus DeAngelo in the mix. The junior forward netted 15 goals and had nine assists last season. During practice this past Saturday, DeAngelo suffered a stress fracture See MOUNT — Page C-2 Continued from Page C-1 of his hip. The injury is caused from over exursion. "It's a muscle seperating from the hip," Belisle said. "You have to wait for the bone to heal and then go to rehabilatation. You're looking at four to five weeks (where he'll be out)." Replacing DeAngelo on Friday night was freshman Trevor Plante, who more than filled his role against the Titans. "I thought we did very well taking a freshman like Trevor Plante and putting him with the top line," Belisle said. "He played great. He's just playing great. That was a lot of pressure for that kid and he played well. I think when we do get Peter back it's is only going to make us stronger offensively." Mount out-shot Toll Gate by a 33-21 margin. It was able to withstand a spirited effort from the Titans in the third period to hang on to the shutout. The defensemen, anchored by sophomores Fattore and Shane Dunphey, played a big part in that aspect. Goalie Jason SanAntonio had 21 saves for the night. "We replaced three defensemen (from last year)," Belisle said. "I thought our defense, as young as they were, were pretty steady back there." After winning a national-record 26 state championships between 1978 -2003, the Mounties are in a four-year drought from earning a title. They'll hope to reverse that trend this season with another talented squad. Mount St. Charles 1 1 0 — 2 Toll Gate 0 0 0 — 0 First period — 1. MSC, Kyle Beauchamp (Josh Fattore) 3:53.
