Woonsocket softballers stun Mounties E-mail
Friday, 01 May 2009
WOONSOCKET --- Freshman catcher Kelsey Boucher’s third home run of the season, a two-run shot over the left fielder’s head, was the difference in Woonsocket High’s biggest victory to date, an exciting 4-3 win over Mount St. Charles Academy at Cold Spring Park.
While the win was only the Villa Novans’ second in nine contests, the loss dropped the Mounties (6-1) from the Division I’s unbeaten ranks. But MSC is still alone in first place -- a game ahead of six teams with two losses each in the standings.
“I was very happy to see us play as well as we did today,” said Woonsocket coach Dan Belisle, whose team entered the game with six straight losses and were mercy-ruled in the last three. “We have a little city rivalry with Mount, and the girls were very motivated and wanted to show what they could do.”
Winning pitcher Nicole Boucher struck out four batters and scattered nine hits and three walks. Her counterpart, MSC freshman Olivia Hendricks, put up better numbers that Boucher, firing a five-hitter with nine strikeouts and four walks, but absorbed the tough-luck loss.
The Mounties took a 3-0 lead by scoring a run in the fourth on a passed ball and two in the fifth on RBI singles by Nicole Silva and Hannah Gardella, but the Villa Novans answered back in their half of the fifth.
They cut their deficit to a run on RBI singles by Tiara Bottachiari and Nicole Boucher, and that set the stage for Kelsey Boucher’s magical inside-the-park homer in the Novans’ spacious field.
A big key to the Novans’ victory, noted Belisle, was the errorless defense his team played. It was Woonsocket’s first errorless game of the season.
“We finally played some defense,” added Belisle, whose crew had averaged three miscues per game. “We played a solid complete game and made some big plays when we needed them.”

LINCOLN --- Davies Tech tuned up for tonight’s Division III showdown at Slater Park against unbeaten Tolman High by receiving a no-hitter from Jen March and cruising to a 10-0 victory over visiting Hope High.
The victory, which was halted in the bottom of the fifth inning by the 10-run mercy rule, improved the Patriots’ record to 9-1.
March, who also no-hit Hope in Davies’ season opener, victimized the Blue Wave again by striking out nine batters and walking none. Only one runner reached base on an error.
Offensively, the Patriots received a single and a triple from Wilmarie Cruz and March and three runs batted in by Ariana Alves.
