BURRILLVILLE — A Pascoag man was released on personal recognizance Saturday morning after he allegedly passed a stopped school bus on the left, hit a boy crossing the street, and then sped off, police said.
Police said that 7-year-old Ryan O’Connor of 64 West Road, was struck in front of his home at 3:30 p.m. Friday. Through witness statements, police identified the driver as Paul Desjardins Jr., 20, of 75 Park Place, in Pascoag. Desjardins was allegedly traveling East on West Road when he approached a school bus which was stopped, with red lights flashing, discharging students. According to police, Desjardins passed the school bus on the left hand side striking O’Connor as he was crossing in front of the bus. At that point, Desjardins allegedly sped off and left the scene. The boy was transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, where he was treated for a head injury and released. At 8:15 p.m., Desjardins was located on Pascoag Main Street by Officer Brian Pitts. He was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with bodily injury. Desjardins was arraigned Saturday morning before the bail commissioner, Patricia Coyne-Fague, and released on $5,000 personal recognizance over the objection of the Police Department. Desjardins will also face charges in traffic court for passing a school bus while the bus was discharging students, with red flashers on, police said. |
