By SANDY McGEE BURRILLVILLE — Police say they arrested a Burrillville man as he was about to enter and rob a busy Pascoag bank on Friday. The man had recently been released from prison.
Police received a phone call on Friday. The caller told officers that a Burrillville man was on his way to “rob a bank in Pascoag.” “As a result of the call, we were watching two saving institutions in town - Bank of America and the Rhode Island Credit Union,” said Burrillville Police Chief Col. Bernard E. Gannon. “We were keeping an eye on both of them.” The call was from an individual who “knew the suspect,” according to police. Later that day, Patrolman Jason Cahill observed a man who fit the suspect’s description. The man was seen walking towards the Bank of America building on Pascoag Main Street, police said. The officer stopped 39-year-old Joseph Corbin of 90 Eagle Peak Road just before he entered the bank. Police say they found a hold-up note and red bandanna in Corbin’s possession. The handwritten note said, “This is a robbery. Act very calm. No dye bags,” according to police. Corbin was arrested at the scene and charged with attempted robbery. According to Gannon, the bank was busy at the time of the arrest. “There were people coming in and out of the bank at the time,” he said. Corbin is being held at the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) in Cranston for violating terms of a Superior Court sentence for a previous robbery conviction, according to police. “He was just released from the ACI in June,” Gannon said. “He still had some time to serve (on parole). I would assume that he will be held as a (parole) violator.” In June 2005, Corbin pleaded “nolo contendere” or “no contest” to the charge of second-degree robbery, which was issued by the Pawtucket Police Department. Corbin was sentenced then to 10 years in prison with four years to serve. |
