By SANDY McGEE BURRILLVILLE — The victim of an apparent drowning on Sunday at Spring Lake has been identified by police as 29-year-old Gregg Goyer.
Goyer, formerly of Providence, died Sunday while swimming at Spring Lake in Glendale. While autopsy results are pending, he is presumed to have drowned. Goyer, along with his mother and brother, visited Spring Lake on Sunday for a day at the beach. Goyer was last seen swimming around 1 p.m. in the lake. “An hour or so later, he didn't show,” said Lt. Kevin S. San Antonio of the Burrillville Police Department. “The mother became concerned and they started a search for him.” The family searched the beach, the arcade area and even checked his mother's house, which is about three miles from Spring Lake. Goyer moved from Providence about a week ago. He had been staying at his mother's house on Harrisville Main Street. Around 3 p.m., the family notified beach personnel of the disappearance, police said. “At that point, they searched again with assistance from lifeguards and people at beach,” San Antonio said. At approximately 5:50 p.m., Harrisville Rescue was called to the lake. Lifeguards discovered Goyer's body “at the bottom of the lake,” police said. The body was pulled onto a nearby floating dock about 25 yards out from the shore. Personnel from the Medical Examiner's Office responded to the beach. An autopsy will be conducted, according to police. Goyer had visited Spring Lake just last week, according to police. “He could swim,” San Antonio said. The beach, which was heavily crowded, was closed Sunday evening. Arrangements were also made to provide counseling for the beach's lifeguards, which are mostly teenagers. “It was pretty shocking for them,” San Antonio said. “They have never seen anything like this.” Responding to the area on Sunday were members of Harrisville and Pascoag Fire Departments, which provided boats for the search. |
