JOHNSTON- Robert E. (Bob) Potter, 87, died Saturday, November 30th at Miriam Hospital surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of the late Anita J. Ducharme.
Born on October 18, 1926 in Burrillville, a son of the late Ernest E. Potter and Elizabeth (Cole) Potter, he was a resident of Burrillville nearly all of his life and most recently resided in Johnston. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Good Help Church.
Prior to his retirement in 1996, Bob was the Town Clerk in Burrillville. Active in town politics, he served as a member and President of the Town Council and member and Chairman of the Board of Canvassers for many years. Previously he was employed by A.B. Munroe Dairy and Arkwright Inc. He was also a member and President of the Townsmen Club in Burrillville.
Bob was a World War II veteran and served as a United States Merchant Marine on the hospital ship St. Olaf in the Atlantic and Pacific war zones.
He was an avid sports fan, baseball in particular, and spent many years coaching Little and Senior league teams in the town. He was instrumental in developing the Sherman Field Baseball Complex.
He is survived by his son, Gary R. Potter and his wife Jacquelyn of North Smithfield, Gail Potter-Bynoe of Providence, Lynne M. and Lynda J. Potter of Johnston. He was the father of the late Christine A. Champagne. Bob was the devoted and proud grandfather of Megan E. Tucker and husband Ben, Nathan R. Potter and his wife Laura, Trevor H.C. Bynoe and his wife Andrea, Zachary P. Bynoe, Devan P. and Kyle A. Champagne, and loving great-grandfather of Grace. C. Potter. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ernest, William, George and Grover Potter and sisters Elizabeth Kelly, Helen Pepler and Clara Potter.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 4 at 8:30 am at the Keene- Brown Funeral Home, 445 Greenville Road, North Smithfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Our Lady of Good Help Church, 1063 Victory Highway, Mapleville, RI. Burial with military honors will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Harrisville, RI. Calling hours are Tuesday, December 3 from 4 p.m. to 8 pm.
