BURRILLVILLE- Rose A. (LaFay) Bernard passed peacefully on November 10, 2013 at home surrounded by her caring family.
Devoted wife of 67 years to Leo Paul Bernard; loving mother of Paul R. Bernard (Irene) of Nova Scotia, Patricia M. Peterson (Dennis) of Ohio, and Cynthia A. Bernard of Mohegan; cherished grandmother of Jennifer Boisvert, Matthew, Sarah, and Pauly Bernard, and Kendra and Alysa Peterson; and great-grandmother of Jonathan Boisvert. She was the loyal sister of Theresa Fontenault (Raymond) of Mohegan and the late Emile O. LaFay, Jr. (Mildred) and Yvette Ramsey (Garland).
Rose held a variety of positions throughout her career beginning in area mills and later as a production worker at Bachman Jack, Birch Hill Poultry Farm, and PolyTop Corporation. During World War II, she served her country as an aircraft spotter for the Civil Air Patrol and was involved in the manufacture of Ghost Army equipment. Her most coveted position was in Dining Services at Bryant College (University) where she managed the Rotunda kiosk. During her "retirement" years, she served as the substitute staff coordinator for the Burrillville School Department, working well into her eighties.
Rose enjoyed sewing, cross stitch, crocheting, baking, and gardening.
A long-time and very active parishioner at St. Theresa's Church, Nasonville, she was a member of the Rosary and Altar Society, a captain for Project Salvation, and a performer in many minstrels and variety shows. She volunteered at St. Antoine's Residence in the production, choreography, costuming, performing, and archiving of many fund-raising shows staged by its TMT Gang. In addition, she belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion, Post 88.
Rose's life will be celebrated with calling hours on Friday, December 6, 2013 from 4:00 until 7:00 pm at BOUCHER FUNERAL HOME, 272 Sayles Avenue, Pascoag. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 11:15 am at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Church, 35 Dion Drive, Nasonville. Inurnment will follow in St. Theresa's Cemetery. As an alternative to flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Rose's memory to St. Antoine's Residence Activities Department, 10 Rhodes Avenue, North Smithfield, RI 02896.
