BURRILLVILLE- Brother Lawrence J. Bergeron, S.C., (baptized Alcide), 95, of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Provincial House, Pascoag, RI, died November 5, 2010 at Mt. St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland, RI. Born in Scotstown, PQ, Canada, he was the son of the late Joseph Bergeron and Delina Dictionnee (Desmarais) Bergeron.
Brother Lawrence entered the Brothers of the Sacred Heart December 24, 1929 at St. Hyacinthe, Qubec, Canada. He pronounced his first vows in 1932 in Granby, Qubec, and his perpetual vows in 1938 at St. Hyacinthe, Qubec.
Brother Lawrence was a professed religious for 78 years, serving in a variety of locations including Canada, Haiti, Rome, Italy, Zambia, Africa, and New England. Brother Lawrence was part of the group of Brothers who founded the Brothers mission in Haiti in 1943. Throughout his life, Brother Lawrence was a teacher, formation director, maintenance worker, bookkeeper, librarian, printer, and cantor at the Liturgy.
For the past ten years, Brother Lawrence has lived a life of intense prayer and been a presence to his family, friends, and Brothers in religious community. In October, 2007, he celebrated his 75th anniversary of Religious Profession.
Brother Lawrence is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and their families.
The wake will be held at the Provincial House, 685 Steere Farm Road, Pascoag, RI, Monday, November 8, 2010 at 3 p.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial in the Chapel of the Provincial House at 4 p.m. Burial will be in the Brothers' Cemetery in Pascoag. In lieu of flowers, donations in Brother Lawrences memory can be made to the African Mission Fund, Business Office, Brothers of the Sacred Heart, 685 Steere Farm Road, Pascoag, RI 02859. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brown Funeral Home in Oakland.
